B + W 77mm 0.6 Graduated Neutral Density Light Correction Filter for Digital & Analog Photography
Category: Hardware Date: 05-09-2005

When taking scenic pictures, the sky is often brighter than the ground. If you meter to expose the ground correctly, the sky is over-exposed (washed out), while if you correctly expose the sky, the ground is under-exposed (too dark.). This is where graduated neutral density filters come in. Neutral density graduates (ND grads) are designed to darken the sky without changing its natural color. A graduated neutral density filter is considered a must-have in landscape photography. It preserves cloud detail in landscape photographs by lowering the sky exposure to more closely match that of the foreground. When used correctly, ND grads capture radiant sunsets & breath-taking scenics. ND grads come in several densities 0.3, 0.6, & 0.9. The 0.6 density provides the best compromise, giving a 2-stop light reduction. Some of the less expensive filter systems include ND grads that arent completely neutral. These may affect the graduated part of the filter, giving your image a color cast. B+W professional filters are made to a much higher standard and are carefully checked to ensure they give even light absorption across the visible spectrum B+W filters are made to the same high technology standards that are used in the production of the worlds finest lenses. They are diamond cut from German Schott optical glass, precision ground, polished and tested to the finest lens quality to ensure flatness and parallel thickness. This assures that every B+W filter is free from color aberrations and internal flaws. Many other brands of filters are cut from greenish window glass sheets or made from pressed blanks; methods that introduce internal strain and stress. Combined with imperfections in the glass, this can cause refraction of light and inconsistent image quality. With so many B+W filters to choose from, you should never make your good lens a loser by degrading it with an inferior filter.
