The UV filter is one of the most important filters to own & it should be available for every lens. It has two important purposes. The filter blocks the invisible UV rays which can cause a loss of sharpness. The use of the filter is particularly recommended for work in the mountains, at the ocean, & in areas with very clear air. The contrasts are heightened, & distorting fog is avoided. The colors come out more clearly, & telephoto pictures have more clarity & sharpness. The filter glass is colorless, & hence no increase in the exposure time is required. This type of filter is also eminently suitable as protection for the front lens, & because of its color-neutral properties it can remain on the camera lens permanently. A scratched front lens element can not be repaired & replacement is costly. Exchanging a damaged UV filter for a new one is more economical than the purchase of a new lens. The UV filter is utilized in connection with digital cameras, as well as in analog photography in color & black & white. What is especially important is the high optical & mechanical quality that B+W guarantees, since filters utilizing glass &/or coatings of a lower standard, reduce the performance of a lens. Filters as lens protection : Good lenses are far more expensive than filters, therefore it makes good sense to attach a filter to protect the lens sensitive front element. In order for this lens protection not to add a permanent filter effect, the protective filter should consist of clear, completely colorless glass with the highest possible transparency. The extremely hard MRC coating with its water- & dirt-repelling capability optimizes the protective effect & facilitates cleaning in case of accidental fingerprints or when the surface becomes soiled. This, by the way, is all the more important with digital cameras, whose picture quality, because of the shorter focal length of their lenses, is much more sensitive to dirt on the front element of a lens! |
